LiveYoga FAQs
What is Yoga?

The word Yoga in Sanskrit means Union. This can be explained in many ways. Union between Body, Mind and Soul, between object and the subject, or between the individual consciousness (Jivatman) and the universal consciousness or the Soul (Atman). The whole practice of Yoga basically is a very advanced blueprint on how to realize this Union. This practice involves moral rules on how to live righteously, how to work with the body & breath, use the senses correctly and still the mind. The practice of the poses (asanas) in the West has mostly come to be associated with Yoga. This kind of Yoga is called Hatha Yoga and is one specific form of learning to experience and realize Yoga through the body. Experiences of balance, happiness, love and emotional stability are all wonderful by-products of the practice. Read more about Yoga and what it enhanced here.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being. Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. In Pilates the chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise. Pilates also focuses on the mind-body connection. While doing the various exercises your mind needs to be constantly aware of your breathing and the way your body moves.

What is the difference between a class card and a membership at your yoga studio?

To practice Yoga and Pilates with us, you can choose to do this via a class card or a membership. A Class Card gives you a specific number of classes and you pay one time upfront. there are different class cards with a different number of classes. The more you purchase at once, the more discount you receive.

A membership is a monthly subscription that is subtracted from your bank account every month. There are different tiers you can choose from, and they respond to the number of times you practice during the week. The price you pay per class with a Membership is much lower than with a class card and often there are extra discounts available on workshops and other in school activities.

Why do Yoga Studios in Amsterdam offer so many yoga styles?

Yoga studios in Amsterdam or any Western part of the world offer a lot of different yoga styles. Over the last 100 years, Yoga made its way from India into the rest of the world. To make Yoga easier to access for Western people, the physical aspect of yoga, Hatha Yoga and its poses (asanas), where the main things that were adapted. In the West, we are schooled through a scientific objective way of reviewing the world. That is why coming through something as spiritual and subjective as Yoga through something relatable as the body is often a good starting point.

Because there is such a wide difference in people, along the way certain aspects of Hatha Yoga were emphasised into different styles. For active and strong people, for instance, the flow aspect of Hatha Yoga was adapted into Vinyasa Yoga. For the more introspective types, Restorative and Yin Yoga was created. It is good to know we all need different styles at different times in our lives. And all these paths are as beautiful and important as the other. They can all equally serve as a path towards the realization of Yoga. Check our class page for all the different styles of Yoga we currently offer!

Can I practice Yoga and Pilates together?

Yes, you can practice Yoga and Pilates next to each other. In fact, the reason why we offer both is that they are very complementary to one another. Pilates can help us to build up core strength which we can use to stay longer in different yoga poses. Staying longer in Yoga poses (asanas) can open up the door the a deeper spiritual and experimental understanding of our body and mind. Take a look at our schedule here and see when we offer Yoga and Pilates.

I joined LiveYoga in the very beginning, in 2009, and since then I am enthousiast about the quality of the classes, teachers, personal care. After each yoga class I feel goed, happy, quiet, no matter in which state I entered the class. I really enjoy learning so much about my body during class, from highly educated and wise teachers. Since almost 7 years I am regular practicioner at the Live Yoga shala. I have been to other yoga schools before but never have been as happy with them, as I have been with this one. It has to do with the great atmosphere (a cosy place where I immediately felt at home), friendly and very skilled teachers who obviously have a great passion and deep knowledge of yoga. They are all different and I keep learning new and different things of each one of them. There are enough lessons to choose from and are easy to combine with family and work-life. I highly recomend this LiveYoga Iyengar yoga school to anyone who wants to feel better physically as well as mentally!read more

I visited Live yoga by chance while on a business trip in Amsterdam. They welcomed me and made space for me in the class even though I had not booked in advance. Asaf is both a dynamic and careful teacher. I appreciated his enthusiasm and attention to tiny details: even though he knew I was only there for the day he took the time to correct me, down to relaxation pose! The studio is pretty and very clean (one has to clean the mats before leaving class). There is a small relaxation area where one can have a cup of tea and take a look at the nice props on sale. I will definitely come back to practice here if I get a chance.read more

Asaf is a great well-educated Iyengar teacher who can guide you through the classes from beginners to experienced level. He notices every detail and pays attention to every individual. His teachings take you step by step in the right poses; you always learn something new and come out of class more improved then you started. At the end of class your inner body feels more quiet and your outer body more stretched and flexible. The studio is beautiful, clean, and well equipped. Absolutely worth while to go for a visit or a try out-class and have a look yourself.read more
